Shopify's Real Cost in 2026: What Merchants Actually Pay

Shopify starts at $39/month (billed monthly) — but that's not what you pay. Here's a full breakdown of Shopify fees, app costs, and what three real merchant types spend monthly.

The Real Cost of Shopify in 2026: What Merchants Are Actually Paying

Shopify's pricing page shows $39 per month for the lowest tier (billed monthly). What it doesn't show is what you'll actually spend after transaction fees, app subscriptions, and the tools that make your store functional.

This is that breakdown — real numbers from Shopify's pricing page, the App Store, and three merchant scenarios that show exactly what different types of businesses pay month after month.

The Price Shopify Advertises vs. The Price You Actually Pay

Shopify's headline plans look simple: $39/month, $105/month, or $399/month (billed monthly). Choose a tier, launch your store, sell your products.

The reality is more complicated. Shopify's business model has layers: the platform cost, payment processing fees on every transaction, optional but often essential app fees, and surcharges if you use a payment processor other than Shopify Payments. The plan you choose is just the entry point.

Most merchants, especially those who've been running a Shopify store for more than a few months, aren't paying anything close to their plan price. They're paying their plan price plus a stack of additional costs that compound as their business grows.

Shopify's Pricing Plans in 2026

Shopify's current plans (billed month-to-month) are:

  • Basic: $39/month — up to 2 staff accounts, live chat support, up to 3 B2B catalogs
  • Grow (formerly "Shopify"): $105/month — standard reports, up to 5 staff accounts, live chat support, up to 3 B2B catalogs
  • Advanced: $399/month — up to 15 staff accounts, third-party calculated shipping rates, live chat support, up to 3 B2B catalogs
  • Shopify Plus: starts at $2,300/month — enterprise-grade infrastructure, advanced checkout customization, priority support, unlimited B2B catalogs

Annual billing saves roughly 25% on the core three plans, bringing Basic down to $29/month, Grow to $79/month, and Advanced to $299/month.

What About Transaction Fees?

Subscription costs are fixed. Transaction fees aren't — they compound on every sale you make.

If you use Shopify Payments (Shopify's built-in processor), credit card rates are:

  • Basic: 2.9% + 30¢ per online transaction
  • Grow: 2.7% + 30¢
  • Advanced: 2.5% + 30¢

If you use a third-party processor — PayPal, Stripe, Square, or anything other than Shopify Payments — Shopify adds a surcharge on top of that processor's own fees:

  • Basic: +2% per transaction
  • Grow: +1% per transaction
  • Advanced: +0.6% per transaction

That means a merchant on the Basic plan using PayPal is paying PayPal's processing fee plus Shopify's 2% surcharge on every sale. For a store doing $20,000/month in revenue, that's an extra $400/month just in surcharges — $4,800 per year to use a payment processor other than Shopify's own.

There are a few other fees worth knowing:

  • International cards: +1% on all plans when the card and store currencies differ
  • Premium card rates (Amex, certain rewards cards): 3.5% + 30¢ on Basic, scaling down by plan
  • Shopify Tax (automated sales tax): free up to $100,000/year in US sales; after that, 0.35% per order calculated

None of these appear on Shopify's main pricing page in a way most merchants notice before they launch.

The Apps You Can't Run Without

Shopify's core platform handles checkout and payments. Everything else — reviews, shipping, subscriptions, page builders, wholesale pricing — typically requires a third-party app. Most production stores run between 5 and 15 apps.

Here's what some of the most popular and commonly used apps actually cost (verified from the Shopify App Store, June 2026):

Customer Reviews Judge.me is the standard choice for product reviews. The free plan covers unlimited reviews; the Awesome plan — which unlocks AI features, Klaviyo integration, Google Shopping syndication, and advanced widgets — runs $15/month.

Shipping and Fulfillment ShipStation is the go-to for merchants shipping from multiple carriers or managing high volume. Pricing is structured around three tiers — Starter, Standard, and Premium — but costs scale with your monthly shipment volume, not just the plan you choose.

Entry prices start at 50 shipments/month: Starter from $14.99/month (3 users, basic automations), Standard from $29.99/month (10 users, unlimited automations, bring-your-own carrier accounts), and Premium from $349.99/month (15 users, advanced inventory and warehouse management, custom analytics). But the more you ship, the more you pay. volume changes the math fast. At 500 shipments/month, you're looking at $39.99 on Starter and $89.99 on Standard. At 1,000 shipments/month, those jump to $79.99 and $149.99, respectively. High-volume operations at 5,000+ shipments/month reach $174.99 (Starter) or $249.99 (Standard) before stepping into Premium territory.

The takeaway: Shipping apps like ShipStation are strong tools, but merchants should model their actual shipment volume before committing — the monthly cost looks very different at 100 shipments versus 1,000.

Product Bundles and Upsells Bundler, one of the most popular bundle apps, has a robust free plan. The Premium tier — which unlocks Mix & Match bundles, custom landing pages, and funnel upsells — costs $9.99/month.

Landing Pages and CRO PageFly, a widely used drag-and-drop page builder, offers a free tier limited to one slot. Paid plans start at $24/month; the tier most growing stores use with additional page slots and analytics runs around $39/month.

Subscription Commerce Recharge is the dominant subscription management platform on Shopify. Pricing is layered: a new $25/month entry tier exists but caps at 50 lifetime subscribers (net-new merchants only). Once you scale past that, the standard Starter tier is $99/month + 1.49% + 19¢ per subscription transaction. The Plus tier for high-volume subscription brands runs $499/month + 1.34% + 19¢.

Wholesale / B2B Pricing Wholesale Gorilla's Premium plan — which includes custom pricing for customer groups, net checkout terms, manual orders, and restricted store access — runs $149.95/month.

These are individual apps. Most stores running multiple revenue streams need several of them simultaneously.

Three Merchant Scenarios: What You're Really Paying

Numbers on a pricing page mean different things depending on how you use the platform. Here are three realistic merchant types, built with verified app pricing, to show what Shopify actually costs at different stages.

Scenario 1 — The Starter Merchant

A new or small store on Shopify Basic with core apps to operate professionally:

CostMonthly
Shopify Basic$39.00
Judge.me (Awesome)$15.00
ShipStation (Starter)$14.99 at 50 shipments/month, 3 users, basic automations
Bundler (Premium)$9.99
Fixed monthly total$78.98

This is the lean version of a Shopify store. No subscription commerce. No advanced page builder. No wholesale. Just the basics to run a real operation.

Scenario 2 — The Growing Merchant

A mid-market store on Shopify Grow with a more complete app stack: reviews, shipping, bundling, a page builder, and subscription products:

CostMonthly
Shopify Grow$105.00
Judge.me (Awesome)$15.00
Bundler (Premium)$9.99
ShipStation (Standard)$29.99 at 50 shipments/month, 10 users, unlimited automations.
PageFly (Optimize tier)$39.00
Recharge (Starter flat fee)$99.00
Recharge variable (200 subs × $50 avg order)~$53.80
Estimated monthly total~$351.78

Scenario 3 — The Scaling Merchant

A high-volume store on Shopify Advanced running a full commercial stack: subscriptions, wholesale, advanced page builder, and high-volume shipping:

CostMonthly
Shopify Advanced$399.00
Judge.me (Awesome)$15.00
Bundler (Premium)$9.99
Recharge (Starter flat fee)$99.00
Recharge variable fees~$150.00+
Wholesale Gorilla (Premium)$149.95
ShipStation (Premium)$349.99 at 50 shipments/month, 15 users, advanced inventory and warehouse management
PageFly (~Optimize tier)$39.00
Estimated monthly total~$1,211.93+

Shopify Plus merchants start at $2,300/month for the platform alone — before apps, payment fees, and development costs. Most Plus merchants are spending $5,000+ per month on their full Shopify bill.

That doesn't mean every Plus merchant should switch. Shopify Plus earns its price for merchants who need deep custom integrations, complex international storefronts, or a mature app ecosystem they've built around. But there's a subset of Plus merchants who are overpaying for features they aren't using — and could switch to Merchant Tech without losing any functionality.

A clear example: coffee roasters who moved to Plus specifically for multiple sales channels, unlimited B2B catalogs for wholesale accounts, and priority customer support. Merchant Tech supports all three. A merchant in that position could be looking at tens of thousands in annual savings while keeping the same core capabilities they built their store around.

What $79/Month Actually Gets You With Merchant Tech

Merchant Tech offers one plan priced at $79/month with credit card processing fees starting at 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. That includes payment processing, storefront tools, and core commerce infrastructure.

In other words, everything is built in, with no apps or upgrades to account for later. Merchant Tech was built to eliminate the fee stacking that makes Shopify expensive at scale. There are no hidden surcharges on top of your processing rates, no escalating costs for using tools outside the platform's own ecosystem, and no separate subscription fees layered on top of each other for features your store needs to run.

If you're on Shopify Basic running even a modest app stack — reviews, shipping, and one or two additional tools — you're likely spending more per month than a comparable Merchant Tech setup. At the Growing or Scaling merchant stage, the gap widens considerably.

Merchant Tech handles the commerce infrastructure merchants actually need: product catalog management, checkout, payment processing, multiple sales channels, order management, and customer data — in one transparent price point.

FAQ

What are Shopify's transaction fees in 2026?

Shopify charges from 2.9% + 30¢ per online transaction on the Basic plan, from 2.7% + 30¢ on the Grow plan, and from 2.5% + 30¢ on the Advanced plan when using Shopify Payments — rates may be higher depending on card type. If you use a third-party payment processor instead, Shopify adds an additional surcharge of 2%, 1%, or 0.6% respectively on top of your processor's own fees.

Does Shopify charge transaction fees if I use Shopify Payments?

No additional surcharge applies — but you still pay Shopify's standard credit card processing rates (2.9% + 30¢ down to 2.5% + 30¢ depending on plan). Shopify eliminates its third-party transaction surcharge only if you use Shopify's own payment processor.

How much do Shopify apps typically cost per month?

It varies significantly by store complexity. Shopify's own data and third-party analyses suggest most small-to-mid-market stores spend $50 to $300/month on apps. Stores running subscription commerce, wholesale pricing, or high-volume shipping can easily exceed $500/month in app costs alone, on top of their platform subscription.

What is Shopify Plus and what does it cost?

Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise tier, designed for high-volume or complex merchants. It starts at $2,300/month on a revenue-based structure (typically a percentage of monthly sales above a minimum threshold). Plus includes advanced checkout customization, dedicated launch engineering, priority support, and expanded API access.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Shopify for small businesses?

Yes. Several platforms offer flat-rate pricing with fewer fees stacked on top of each other. For merchants whose primary concern is the compounding cost of Shopify's fee structure — plan costs plus app costs plus processing surcharges — platforms that bundle more functionality into the base price, like Merchant Tech, are worth evaluating. The right choice depends on your sales volume, operational complexity, and how much of your revenue you're comfortable allocating to platform costs.
